Magazine Cover Analysis

Fangoria is a film magazine that is specifically for the horror genre. It was first published in 1979 and whilst it is a US magazine, it is also published internationally. The title suggests that whilst it is a horror magazine, it aims at fans of gore (“Fan” + “Goria”) and this is likely to feature in a lot of the magazine. The magazine cover features a colour palette of predominantly black, yellow and red which are typically associated with the horror genre and the font also represents the horror genre; especially the title which looks like stereotypical vampire writing. The background of this cover has what looks like red blood splatters, which also conforms with the horror genre.

The main image of this particular magazine cover features a zombie, who is actually the well known special effects creator Tom Savini who worked on famous films such as Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and Friday the 13th. Having somebody like Tom Savini on the cover attracts his fan base to buying the magazine because they will be interested to read his interview and find out what he is talking about, since the cover doesn’t give anything away.

Other cover lines on this magazine cover mention other famous filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg. This suggests that this magazine is aimed at people who are interested in how the film was made and who was behind it, rather than just focusing on the characters in the film. This leads me to suggest that this film would be aimed at probably a predominantly male demographic of aged 16-30.
