'Psycho' Image Analysis

The opening title for Psycho is very simple, with a black background and white text. The lettering is disjointed creating an effect which makes the audience feel weird. You can clearly read the word but the odd style makes it unsettling to look at. As white usually connotes innocence, I can infer that this text is supposed to be interpreted as corrupted innocence or a schizophrenic personality. Having no image in the opening title creates a sense of mystery, because the audience don’t know who the psycho is or what the film is even about at this point, although for audiences at the time of release they will certainly be thinking about Ed Gein. From this opening title I can already infer that Hitchcock intended for the exact plot to stay a secret.
