Empire is a British film magazine that is published monthly in a number of countries and is the UK’s best selling film magazine. It was first published in 1989 and is now owned by the Bauer Consumer Media group.
This cover is the 25th anniversary edition which is shown by
a celebratory silver badge in a prominent place on the cover. The main image is
of Jennifer Lawrence, the actress who plays Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger
Games films. As the central protagonist of the film, she is featured central
to the page and it is a full length shot of her, which uses Laura Mulvey’s
theory to attract the male gaze. She is also in direct mode, which attracts her
fan base and helps the audience form a personal connection with her. Since this
film is extremely popular, having the central protagonist on the front cover of
the magazine will ensure that people buy copies, even if they only buy this
issue.
The popularity of the magazine is shown by the masthead;
even though it is covered up by the main image the audience still immediately
recognises the magazine. The masthead is red which will also attract the
attention of readers. Other cover lines of the magazine fit in with the colour
theme of the cover; apart from the main image the cover is mainly red and white
which is shown through the text colour. Another selling point of this magazine
is the selling line just underneath the masthead saying “THE EPIC ISSUE” which
will attract readers by making them think that they’re getting even more in
this particular issue.
