'Psycho' Image Analysis
This image from Psycho is when it is revealed that Norman is the psycho who is acting as his mother. Closely following him is Sam, who identifies himself as the hero according to Propps character functions because if Sam hadn’t have been there, Lila would have become another one of his victims. The low key lighting in this scene casts sinister shadows across the walls and make Norman look looming and powerful. The camera is slightly at a low angle which reinforces this.
Norman is holding a phallic symbol as a weapon which is what he has used for the two murders in the film and this reiterates his power which is then undermined by Sam. The manic code of expression on Norman’s face suggests insanity which could link to the schizophrenia that is hinted at in the film’s opening title. His code of dress reiterates this because he is wearing a women’s dress and wig over his normal clothes and can therefore swap between personalities easily.
